ECHOES OF PLACE: A SPATIAL MEMORY SOUND WALK @THE MIX

Echoes of Place is an experimental sound walk that invites visitors to explore the outside perimeter of the ASU MIX Center as a living archive. As you move, imagined soundscapes reveal layered histories: the irrigation networks of the Akimel O’odham (Pima) and Pee Posh (Maricopa) peoples; the agricultural and church-centered community of early Mormon settlers; the WWII hangar that later hosted the Maricopa County Fair; and the midcentury buzz of the El Portal Hotel, once home to a lively bar and Spring Training guests, including Chicago Cubs players. Each step acts like a query into these temporal fragments, echoing database-driven storytelling. Today, the MIX Center adds its own frequencies of film, game, and media creation. Through sound, Echoes of Place lets listeners drift through overlapping eras, experiencing downtown Mesa as an interactive field of memory where past and present resonate together.

Special thanks to The Mesa Room.
